While I am no scholar concerning Pauline doctrine, or, well, anything for that matter…it seems to me that Paul practically states his “thesis” if you will in Romans 1:15-17. It seems fairly evident that Paul is writing to the Roman church to present the Gospel (or at the least correct misconceptions). He says he’s ready to preach the Gospel to those in Rome (1:15), that he is not ashamed of it because it’s the power of God to salvation for all who believe (v.16) and that in the Gospel, the “righteousness of God” is revealed…to me, this appears to be Paul’s thesis, the righteousness of God. We see it over and over throughout Romans…so how can anyone look at the book (or letter) of Romans and say that it is about “letting the Gentiles in without disenfranchising the Jews” (Doug Moo, Encountering the Book of Romans)??? Have we really gone that far off track? Have we forgotten that the Bible is God’s revelation of HIMSELF to man? It is not some apologetic for Jewish beliefs and practices that clearly contradict the New Testament, even if they were “covenantly elected” the Gospel clearly states that it is the cross, and the cross alone that saves mankind from Sin, which makes the concept of “maintaining salvation by works” ridiculous, for the Jew and Gentile alike!
